Write Right: It's not about you

How to illuminate your story — for your audience

Creating a document for others to read can be intimidating. Be it marketing materials, a slide deck presentation, blog posts, or social media content, having your words mean something to another person(s) is a skill, and can take years to develop.

Yet, there is a way to take a huge step forward in connecting with your reader. After all, you’re investing valuable time writing. Don’t you want people to read it? (Of course, you do.)

Ask yourself these questions before, during, and after you write:

  • Who is my primary audience? (Existing customers)

  • Who is my secondary audience? (Potential customers)

  • What do I want them to do? (Comment? Vote? Share? Buy?)

  • Will they understand my message? (Are you speaking in their language, or yours?)

We do a lot of writing here at C3 Collective in many different styles. Our journalism roots taught us to always ask, “What’s the story — and who really cares?”. If you are an expert in your field, this can be difficult. You’re excited about the topic and want to share everything you know down to the smallest detail. While this may earn you an “A” in college, it could be a failing you in communicating your personal brand or company message.
